The Gibson GK-55 was made in 1979 and
sold through 1980. A one year stretch which turned out to be a
more sought after guitar than imagined. Gibson only made
1,000 of these guitars and many have been trashed over the years.
We have no idea how many of them are left or who has the original
one I bought back then that was stolen. Just like the Musicman
amplifiers were that of great quality, these two influential items
were taken out of production. I know the Music Man amplifier
vanished because of the high manufacturing cost. Can't beat
the quality. I still have a Music Man today totally revamped
and sounding great.
The GK-55 has a bolt
on neck with a Les Paul type body and the finish in tobacco sunburst. Single
cutaway, slab Mahogany body. Open dual coil
pickups also known as "dirty finger pickups" with beige trim. The body is like a Les Paul only
flat. Tune-O-Matic bridge. with a TP-6 tailpiece. Grover tuners. Slightly wider neck
than the Les Paul with a curve to it. Unbound rosewood
fingerboard with dot inlay.
According to Gibson
there were two Gibson factories prodiucing the GK-55. If the
last 3 numbers of the serial are between 001-499 then your GK
was built at the Kalamazoo plant. If the last three
numbers are 500-999 then it was built in the Nashville plant.
So far all the ones i've seen are from the Kalamazoo plant.
We would like to hear from you about your GK and send us a
picture. You can be in it also if you like. We want
to put you on the site.
