When I was just 14 and my brother 16, one day he said wow you
have to check out this great band I've seen. I met the
guys and they're awesome. So one night my parents ask me
where are you going? I told them out with my brother
Kevin.
So out we went to a nightclub. This was back in the mid
70's mind you. My brother looked a little older than 16.
So we went inside and sat down. A few minutes later a
waitress came up to take our order. So my brother
ordered a Long Island Ice Tea for me. The waitress looked
at my brother which obviously was a repeat customer and asked
"Is he old enough?. My brother replied "Sure he's my
brother!". So on came the drinks. After a couple
drinks the band got up on stage. They were called "The
Stainless Steel Band". Every song they played was
fantastic! I couldn't believe my ears. So my brother
introduced me to them and we became friends. Mark the lead
guitarist is awesome. He is my idol for sure. To
this day, 31 years have passed and he remains my good friend.
They played Classic Rock music. When they played the
Cars it actually sounded better than the Cars themselves.
I remember one night Mark was playing Freebird while the owner
of the club was pouring down a bottle of vodka down his throat
as he played the lead on his Gibson Les Paul behind his back.
It was amazing. On with the story. Phil which played
rhythm guitar, vocals and keyboards had a Gibson GK-55.
Actually he still has it to this day. He loved
it so much and played it all the time. Where the pick
guiard on a guitar would normally be, there was a deep hole worn
into the body of the guitar from his finger resting there.
That's how much he played that guitar.
